Celebrating 150 years of the life and legacy of Sir Henry Royce

We are passionate about the cars, yet I meet many visitors to the home of our Club, The Hunt House, who are not so familiar with the history of the man behind this passion.

When we toast 'Henry Royce - mechanic', we honour his lifelong effort and tireless energy. This is a man who, although seriously ill, was working on engineering sketches two days before he died. His dedication to improvement was relentless.

We read much about the cars, which continue to follow his ideals in their development and design. I recommend the articles about Royce in this Yearbook, which emphasise his importance as an engineer.

Contributors to the Yearbook promote prestige, luxury, elegance and exclusivity.

There is also another common theme. If I may paraphrase some of the words used in last year's edition: In a world that generates a lot of brand hype and marketing noise, we can all relate to understated luxury and a reminder that while fashions change, true style is eternal.

Rolls-Royce launched the Derby Bentley in 1933, an example of true style that lives on today. It is important that the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club maintains this Bentley legacy, and in this anniversary year we take the opportunity to remind ourselves of that. As a club we have a duty to ensure that the heritage of Bentley is not lost. The two great companies came together in 1931, and now they have separated. That should make no difference to us as they continue to follow in the ethos of excellence and push the boundaries of style. We are indebted to both Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd and Bentley Motors Ltd for their contributions to the Yearbook.

Please enjoy this edition. It is a publication that is the envy of all other car clubs, and our partnership with publisher St James's House is a highly successful one. Thank you to all the contributors, especially those Club members who volunteer their time to write such engaging articles.
